Elena Lacayo is a singer-songwriter and leader of the DC-based bilingual Latin-rock band Elena & Los Fulanos. Originally from Managua, Nicaragua, Lacayo identifies herself as both American and Nicaraguan and her music, which ranges from twangy, heartbreak-themed folk Americana, to soothing, introspective, violin-infused Latin rock reflects this dual identity. Her band’s Wammie-nominated debut album, Miel Venenosa, was released in 2014 and her band’s second album, Volcán, (2017) has been hailed as "a bilingual folk album for the resistance" by the Washington City Paper, where she was also included in their People Issue 2017 highlighting notable Washingtonians. Most recently, Elena started playing guitarrón (mariachi bass) with the Latin GRAMMY-winning group, Flor de Toloache.
